| description | English: Figure 5 Early Carboniferous, Viséan. Deformation in the Hercynian (Variscan) Fold Belt began to encroach on southern England ahead of the northward-migrating leading edge of Gondwana. In northern England and the Southern North Sea area, continental sediments derived from the Caledonian Highlands in the north pass into deltaic and marine strata farther south. Fault-related deformation led to considerable thickness variations between the blocks and basins of northern England. A seaway extends west–east from Appalachia in North America to Russia. Lower Carboniferous sequences seem to be draped around the Late Proterozoic Midland Platform. Modified from Ziegler (1987).
