The grade is determined not by the area of the plate but by the largest rectangle that can be obtained from it. The grader may remove some stained films etc. to improve the quality. Unlike most metallic minerals mica is not subject to any process of treatment or concentration whereby its quality can be improved. Quality is an intrinsic character which cannot be altered except in so far as skilful cutting may raise the value by eliminating imperfections.
