British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5734. The'grain'of a slate is a term used by the quarrymen to describe the protruding linear striations on a slate surface, geologically termed a'crenulation lineation'. The term'Old Easdale'on the label probably refers to the particular quarry seam from which this slate was obtained.
