Typical dark grey slate from Easdale, with large yellow metallic pyrite crystals. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5737. The slate is cut and dressed in the Scots style with a&#039;squared and shouldered&#039;outline and a single nail hole at the top. Scottish slates are different from most Welsh and English slates which tend to be more square and have two nails; one in each of the top corners. Slates can be produced in a vast range of shapes and sizes. At its peak in the late 1800?s the slate industry in Scotland produced some 45,000 tons annually.
