|description={{|1=Specimen of roofing slate quarried from Balvicar Quarry, Seil Island, Argyllshire, Scotland. A full size slate cut and dressed in the traditional Scots style, collected from Balvicar Quarry from before the First World War. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5738. The slate is a very dark grey colour with common small pyrite crystals on the surface and a relatively smooth slaty cleavage. This slate was presented to the Geological Survey of Scotland by Messrs. A.&amp;amp;J. McLean of Cullipool. It was marketed as a&amp;#039;Balvicar Sizeable&amp;#039;indicating it is a full-size slate of the best quality. The Scottish slate belts are found in the Grampian Highlands, forming part of the ancient Caledonian mountain system which once extended from the Appalachians to Scandinavia. Specimen size: 37x23cm.
