A high quality very dark grey slate, with relatively smooth surface and small pyrite crystals. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5739. The slate has been cut and dressed in the Scots style. It is classed as an&#039;undersized&#039;slate, but would still have been used for roofing. The Scottish method of hanging slates utilizes a wide range of slate sizes, with the largest slates at the bottom of the roof, becoming smaller towards the top. This method of slating is termed&#039;diminishing courses&#039;. The slates of the Highlands form part of a great assemblage of altered rocks mainly of sedimentary origin, termed the Dalradian Supergroup, largely Precambrian in age. Specimen size: 30x16cm.
