Dark grey slate from Seil Island, with a smooth surface with small pyrite grains. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5740. The smooth surface on this specimen is unusual, as slates from the Easdale belt normally have a strongly lineated surface. There were five quarries at Balvicar, some of which were being worked on a small scale up until 1966. All are now flooded or have been landscaped. The Scottish slate belts are bounded to the south and east by the Highland Boundary Fault, and the north-west margin by the Great Glen Fault. Specimen size: 27x19cm.
