Small sample of slate showing a series of parallel bands of varying colour, termed&#039;ribboning&#039;. The banding is the original sedimentary bedding preserved on the slate surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5741. The different sedimentary bedding represents slightly different periods of sedimentary deposition. Slates were originally deposited as very fine-grained muddy sediments, which have been subsequently subjected to great pressure in the Earth&#039;s crust which has produced a slaty cleavage. True slate is formed from very fine-grained sediments of bedded clay (mud) and silt, probably laid down on a deep ocean floor. Specimen size: 12x11cm.
