Relatively smooth slate with very large pyrite crystals. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5744. Most slates from the Easdale belt or&#039;Slate Islands&#039;of Argyll are characterised by having a strongly lineated surface. This specimen has a particularly smooth surface, producing a very high quality slate. Cuan Point is at the north end of the island of Luing, where slate was extracted from two large workings and several small pits. The quarries were served by a small tramway which transported the slates to the nearby Cuan Ferry. Specimen size: 28x16cm.
