Dark grey slate from the Tobernochy quarries on the isle of Luing. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5745. This slate has a fine diagonal lineation and very small pyrite crystals on the surface, giving a very attractive appearance. Toberonochy quarry reached 175 feet depth in 1937 and had to be pumped to prevent folooding. Slate was lifted out using a steam crane before World War One, later changed to a Crossley engine prior to World War Two. Slate was taken by tramway to the nearby shore where it was dressed, and transferred onto ships at the pier. Specimen size: 27x19cm.
