Typical dark-coloured, smooth-surfaced Ballachulish Slate, with large yellow metallic pyrite crystals. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5748. The East Laroch Quarry was one of the largest individual slate quarries in Scotland, being worked on seven levels or galleries. It produced some of the highest quality slate in Scotland. This specimen is one of several from the East Laroch Quarry donated to the Geological Survey of Scotland sometime before 1911. In 1697 work was begun at the West Quarry at Ballachulish by workmen from Easdale who instructed the locals in the art of slate-making. Specimen size: 27x18cm.
