A full size slate cut and dressed in the traditional Scots style, with straight edges on the sides and base, and a&#039;shouldered&#039;top. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5749. This sample contains superb fresh cubes of yellow metallic pyrite. Pyrite is an iron sulphide mineral which is common in slates from all over the world. It does not nessecarily affect the performance of slate. Pyrite crystals were called&#039;diamonds&#039;by the quarrymen. They are also commonly known as&#039;fools gold&#039;. Despite these terms, pyrite in this form is completely worthless. It is estimated that from 1870 to 1880 the output of Scottish slates was approximately 25-30 million per year, giving employment to 1,000-1,500 men and boys. Specimen size: 38x22cm.
