This slate is marked as&#039;Ballachulish Ordinary Variety&#039;. The Ballachulish Slate Formation is a geological unit approximately 400 metres thick, that lies within the Appin Group of the Dalradian Supergroup. These rocks are Precambrian in age, and form some of the oldest rocks in Britain. The Scottish slate belts are found in the Grampian Highlands, forming part of the ancient Caledonian mountain system which once extended from the Appalachians to Scandinavia.
