Dark grey slate with smooth reflective surface with minor lineation and rare small pyrite crystals. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5757. The small slate quarry 1.25 miles south-west of Tayvallich provided roofing material mainly for local housing. Traditional buildings in this area today still have these dark smooth reflective slates on their roofs. The occurrence of small-scale local slate quarries in various parts of Scotland has resulted in a diversity of roofing materials, adding to the local character and distinctivness of many parts of Scotland. In the Easdale district, the quarrymen had their own Gaelic names for the various parts of a folded outcrop. A working along a gently inclined fold limb, where cleavage and bedding nearly coincide, is said to be on the sgriob. Along a highly inclined limb, the beds were said to be on the beul. At the turn-over, the beds were said to be on the bonn. The cleavage is called sgoltadh.
