Very dark grey slate with smooth reflective surface and little pyrite. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5758. Slate quarries on Islay, Jura and Knapdale were generally on a small scale and only of local significance, although they are geologically related to the Easdale Slate belt, and are of relatively high quality. There are many small slate quarries around Scotland, which exploited local resources and supplied local needs. Most of these quarries are now inacccessible, and many are undocumented. Hard shales, once worked extensively for roofing purposes, occur in various parts of Scotland, but are not true slates. They do not possess slaty cleavage, but owe their splitting ability simply to original bedding. Specimen size: 14x16cm.
