Light grey slate with a reflective micaceous cleavage surface, and&#039;spotty&#039;surface texture defined by small grains, probably of iron oxide. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5760. The Aberdeenshire slates or&#039;Macduff Slates&#039;are dominated by chlorite which gives a paler, more greenish colour compared to the darker slates from Argyll. In addition, pyrite is rare or absent, with hematite and ilmenite being the most significant iron ore minerals. Three seams of slate were worked on the Hill of Foudland. Production began in 1754, and reached a peak during the early part of the 19th century with production of up to 900,000 slates per year. Specimen size: 17x14cm.
