Light grey slate with a darker grey stained cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5761. The specimen has a rough irregular cleavage surface due to the relatively coarse-grained silty nature of the slate. The quarries at Foudland were the most important of the Aberdeenshire slate belt, being particularly active during the 19th century. Unlike Ballachulish and Easdale, the quarries were far from the sea and may have suffered from the difficulties of transport. The opening of the Aberdeenshire Canal in 1805 allowed slate to be transported to Aberdeen, but was soon replaced by the railway in the 1850s. Specimen size: 20x16cm.
