Pale purple-grey slate showing broad banding (ribboning) on the cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5762. The banding represents sedimentary bedding where slightly coarser-grained sands or silts were deposited into the fine-grained dark mudstone. Newtyle quarry was producing slates in the late 1700s, and in the 19th century it was producing 200,000 slates per month. Production continued into the 1930s. The quarries are situated on the hillside east of the road and River Tay, 1 mile east by south of Dunkeld railway station. Specimen size: 15x14cm.
