Small roughly cut slate dressed in the traditional&#039;squared and shouldered&#039;Scots style. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5764. The Bute slates are typically a blue-grey colour. This specimen has a relatively smooth reflective surface, but is in fact relatively coarse-grained with some silty bands. Bute slate was first recorded in 1445 when 130,000 slates were sent to repair Dumbarton Castle. Some slate may also have been used in Glasgow. Slate production in Bute had virtually ceased by the end of the 19th century. Specimen size: 22x13cm.
