Very dark grey slate with relatively smooth cleavage surface and no visible pyrite. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5765. At Corskie a vein of slate 20 metres wide was worked, with production beginning arounf 1700. The quarry forms one of a number of small quarries collectively known as the Strathbogie Quarries. The Aberdeenshire slates belong to the Macduff Slate Formation of the Southern Highland Group rocks. They outcrop widely in the Huntly and Banff areas where numerous small-scale slate quarries are dotted around the countryside. All are now disused. Specimen size: 20x15cm.
