The green colour is due to the predominance of the mineral chlorite. The quarry at Aberuchill was active during the 19th century. It was used mainly for local housing, and the distinctive green slate can still be seen on the roofs of traditional buildings to this day. The Scottish slate industry had its heyday in the 19th century with the rapid urban growth and industrialization of Central Scotland, when huge amounts of slate were used for roofing in cities in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
