Purple-grey slate with distinctive reddish-purple banding caused by the intersection of bedding with the cleavage surface. This variety was termed purple slate. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5770. Camstradden is one of several quarries at Luss which produced slates from the geological formation known as the Dunoon Phyllites. The Luss quarries are some of the oldest documented slate workings in Scotland; the earliest references being from the 15th century. They were still viable in the inter-war years, when in 1935 12 men were producing approximately 750,000 slates annually. Specimen size: 24x16cm.
