Dark grey-greenish slate, termed&#039;green variety&#039;showing very strong ribboning on the cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5772. The Aberfoyle Slates occur in a structurally complex zone of geological deformation known as the Tay Nappe, close to the Highland Boundary Fault. The Tay Nappe is a vast flat-lying fold that overturns rocks of the Southern Highlands over an area of hundreds of square kilometres. The Aberfoyle Slate Formation occurs associated with a more sandsy unit termed the Bed Ledi Grit, named after the hill to the north of Aberfoyle.
