British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5776. Aberfoyle Slate quarries produced a variety of colours including blue, grey, green and purple, as well as a banded&#039;tartan variety&#039;. Aberfoyle was one of the few survivors of the Scottish slate industry following World War I. The quarries had a workforce of over thirty men between the wars, and although production stopped during World War II it was reopened in 1947 by the new Scottish Slate Company. However, as with all the slate quarries in Scotland, production eventually ceased in the 1950s. Specimen size: 15x15cm.
