{{Information<br />
|description={{|1=Specimen of roofing slate from Aberfoyle Slate Quarries, Perthshire, Scotland. Dark grey slate with reflective cleavage surface characterised by strong banding, or&#039;ribboning&#039;of the quarrymen. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5777. Ribboning is the intersection of the original sedimentary bedding with the metamorphic cleavage surface of the slate rock. Different beds represent changing conditions of sedimentary deposition; some beds being finer-grained and more mud-rich (typically darker colour), whilst others are coarser-grained and contain fine sand or silt material (typically lighter in colour). The chief visible characteristics of slates are colour, surface appearance and texture. The colour of Highland slates is usually dark. Blue-grey shades are characteristic of the Ballachulish and Easdale belts, whilst the Highland Border belt has a variety of colours, chiefly grey, blue, purple and green. Specimen size: 15x15cm.
