The slate is very dark grey with a reflective cleavage surface, and a prominent&#039;grain&#039;caused by the intersection of a subordinate secondary cleavage with the main cleavage surface. The specific quarries are recorded as being on the west branch of the burn between Annat and Kilchrenan. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 837. The slate quarries at Kihrenan belong to the Loch Awe slate group, part of a band of slates running from Loch Awe south and west through the Crinan area towards Tayvallich. It has been recorded that apart from roofing slates, slate pencils were also made at Kilchrenan in the very early 1900s. Specimen size: 10x8cm.
