Pale grey-green slate showing&#039;ribboning&#039;or bedding on the cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 1224. The pale green colour is probably caused by the presence of dominant chlorite and white mica (muscovite) in the rock. These are both very common minerals in slate, both having a platy aspect which helps to produce the slaty cleavage. The thin dark bands are sedimentary laminae containing relatively coarse-grained chlorite and white mica, representing slight variations in the sediment being deposited in the original mudstone from which the slate was formed.
