Dark grey slate with relatively rough cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 1223. Corskie Quarry forms one of a series of slate quarries, comprising the&#039;slate hills&#039;of Aberdeenshire. The Corskie Quarry was the earliest in the area, and started production in around 1700. The quarry exploited a vein of slate 20 metres wide, and was worked along a broad open trench to a depth of 5 to 7 metres. The documentation of such&#039;local&#039;sources of slate in Scotland is important to understand and maintain the diversity in our built heritage. The contrast between a Scots slate roof and imported or manufactured material is marked, not only in terms of the unique characteristic range of colour and texture, but also the distinctive style of dressing and laying a roof. Slate is an important part of Scottish history and culture, but it is not just about how it looks; the Scottish slate roof is a superb example of a traditional building skill that has been handed down through the generations.
