Glenartney lies between the major slate quarrying areas of Logiealmond-Dunkeld and Aberfoyle. Here, the Highland Border slate belt passes through just north of the Highland Boundary Fault. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 1506. There are no records of major exploitation of slate in Glenartney, although it may have been extracted on a small scale for local use. The relatively poor cleavage may have made it difficult to use as a roofing slate. Many roofs have been replaced with concrete roofing tiles or artificial slates whose flat, regular uniform appearance and texture contrasts markedly with the more natural and `organic? appearance of Scottish slate. Imported slate from countries such as Spain and China is becoming more common but is not capable of matching the range of sizes and colour and textures of the traditional Scottish practice, and has yet to be proven in the Scottish climate.
