Pale-grey slate with well developed intense cleavage with slight&#039;grain&#039;lineation. The slate is relatively weathered with alteration of original pyrite producing dark brown specks on the cleavage surface and iron staining along cleavage planes. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 1624. The&#039;Margie unit&#039;is part of the enigmatic Highland Border Complex that occurs along the Highland Boundary Fault. It contains occasional slate-rock such as this sample which is locally of reasonable quality, but tends to be faulted, fractured and rather altered. The slate at Margie may never have been of sufficient quality to be used as a roofing material. Specimen size: 11x9cm.
