The specimen is termed&#039;argillaceous slate&#039;meaning clay-rich, which may refer to the fact that the stone was metamorphosed at a relatively low grade. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 2030. The slates in the Duchray area near Aberfoyle belong to the Highland Border Complex, and formed at a lower grade of metamorphism than most of the Scottish slates.
