Grey slate with poorly-developed cleavage and a rough surface showing fine&#039;whispy&#039;bedding laminations representing deposition of the original sediment. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 2032. This slate comes from the Highland Border Complex, an enigmatic suite of mixed rock types that outcrops along the Highland Boundary Fault. It tends to be of lower metamorphic grade than the true Dalradian rocks of the Grampian Highlands, and it also structurally complex, with common faults and fractures. These conditions of formation mean that the slates from the Highland Border Complex are not always suitable for use as roofing materials. Specimen size: 12x11cm.
