Dark grey slate with uniform colour and slight surface&#039;grain&#039;. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 4191. In this rock the original sedimentary bedding is parallel to the slaty cleavage. Some beds are slightly coarser-grained (fine sand or silt grade) than the normal very fine-grained slate (mud grade). This has resulted in the rather rough appearance of the specimen, caused by splitting along the boundaries between beds of different grain size. The slates of Troup Head belong to a small outlier of the Macduff Slates, exposed on this coastal headland. Specimen size: 11x8cm.
