Dark slate with very fine-grained smooth cleavage surface. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 4472. This specimen is very similar to the West Highland&#039;blue&#039;slates, best known from the major quarries at Ballachulish and Easdale. In fact this sample comes from a distinct band of slate that occurs to the east of the Easdale Slate, from the Loch Awe group, which was exploited mainly for local use in a series of small quarries in Knapdale, Tayvallich, around the Crinan Canal, and Kilchrenan near Oban.
