The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 4829. The uniform nature and excellent cleavage of the Ballachulish Slate made it the most popular of the Scottish slates. The Ballachulish Slate quarries were opened in the 1690&#039;s and quarrying continued in the area for over 250 years, until the 1950s. The slate industry was of great importance to Scotland, and the Highland slate quarries are some of the oldest industrial sites in Scotland, and of historical and cultural significance. Historical records refer to the production of slates from Easdale and Caithness in the 16th and 17th centuries, which were used for the roofs of Highland castles. Specimen size: 13x10cm.
