Very dark grey slate from Ballachulish, known as&#039;Oak Variety&#039;, possibly due to the presence of a linear grain on the slate surface not unlike that present in wood. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 5747. The specimen has a particularly large angular pyrite crystal on the surface, showing well the typical yellow metallic colour of this mineral. Slates of slightly different colours or textures were often given different variety names, for example the&#039;tartan variety&#039;from Aberfoyle Quarry which consists of purple and green stripes. The slate industry was of great importance to Scotland, and the Highland slate quarries are some of the oldest industrial sites in Scotland, and of historical and cultural significance.
