It occurs along with muscovite mica in the Carn Gorm mica prospect, near Garve, Rossshire. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7401. The prospect was investigated during the Second World War as a potential source of commercial grade mica for electrical and heat insulation and a wide range of other uses. The two micas occur in a quartz-mica coarse pegmatite in a dyke-like mass which cuts across the pelitic Moine (Precambrian) schists. Biotite occurs in the prospect in books up to fifteen inches in diameter and is sometimes found intergrown with muscovite mica.
