| 1862 | Resigned 30th September. Appointed to Indian Geological Survey. |
| Worked for 11 years in neighbourhood of Bombay and in the Punjab on problems of mountain-building and stratigraphy of the Salt Range. | |
| 1883 | Retired from Indian Survey (ill-health). |
| Rejoined Irish Survey 24th August; took charge of office work on death of J. O’Kelly. | |
| 1889 | President of the Royal Geological Society – Ireland. |
| 1890 | Retired 31st August. |
| 1906 | Died 22nd December at Veytaux, Switzerland. |
