Country and land surface elevation maps
On each country page in this Atlas is a map showing land surface elevation, the country boundary and the location of the capital city. These maps were created especially for the Atlas by combining three separate open source maps for all of Africa from third party providers. The maps for each country were clipped from our derived Africa-wide map.
If you reproduce any of these country maps from this Atlas, please cite both the Africa Groundwater Atlas and the USGS (GTOPO30), GADM and UN - for more details see below.

Data sources
USGS GTOPO30
A digital elevation model (DEM) of Africa was derived from the US Geological Survey (USGS) Global 30 Arc-Second Elevation dataset (GTOPO30), which is available to download from the US Geological Survey.
GADM Global Administrative areas
Administrative country boundaries in the Atlas are derived from the GADM database of global administrative areas (version 2.0), which is available to download from GADM.
UN Revision of World Urbanization Prospects
The locations of capital cities for this map were derived from the 2011 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects, provided by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Population Division, Population Estimates and Projections Section). This is available to download through the United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division website.
