Foreword to the third edition
The first edition of this regional guide was written by the late Dr M. Macgregor and Dr A. G. MacGregor and was published in 1936. A second edition, incorporating minor amendments, was published in 1948. Since then the accumulation of new information and the publication of major research on numerous topics concerning the region has necessitated a complete revision of the text. Mr I. B. Cameron wrote Chapters 1, 4, 6–9, 11, 14, 15 and part of
16. Dr D. Stephenson wrote Chapters 2, 5, 12, 13 and the rest of 16, and Dr J. D. Floyd and Dr R. B. Wilson wrote Chapters 3 and 10 respectively. The book was edited by Dr R. B. Wilson. The authors wish to record their gratitude for the assistance and advice given by their colleagues in the Survey during the preparation of this guide.
