The Akers Steps Member (stratotype: Akers Steps [TR 297 394]), 22.9 m thick at Akers Steps, comprises nodular chalk with regularly occurring laterally persistent flints and marl seams (Robinson, 1986). The base is marked by the first (un-named) laterally persistent flint in the North Downs Chalk Group succession, and the top is the base of the Crab Bay Marl, at the base of the overlying Ramsgate Chalk Formation (Robinson, 1986). Key markers include the Lydden Spout Flint, a distinctive large nodular flint with scattered smaller burrow-form flints below it, and the four Langdon Bay Marls, the lowest (c. 12cm thick) and highest (c. 9 cm thick) of which are the most conspicuous (Robinson, 1986).
