Major groundwater projects in Burundi
BGR
The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) has been involved in a groundwater project in Burundi in cooperation with Burundian government institutions:
Burundi: Management and Protection of Groundwater Resources
The Management and Protection of Groundwater Resources in Burundi project is a bilateral cooperation project of the Burundian Ministère de l’Eau, l’Environnement, l’Aménagement du Territoire et de Urbanisme (MEEATU) and BGR. The direct project partner is the Institut Géographique du Burundi (IGEBU). The project is integrated with the Programme Sectoriel Eau (ProSecEau), a national water and sanitation programme.
The project aims are to quantify and protect groundwater resources. In particular, the project is focused on the following activities:
- estimating groundwater resources in the granite aquifer in Kirundo province;
- delineation of protection zones for the Gitega city water supply system;
- definition of the quality and quantitative potential of local groundwater resources in Rumonge.
More information, and downloads of many project reports and maps, can be found on the project website.
