I am a Chartered Geologist with over 30 years experience of UK regional geology. I am currently Science Director for Geology and Regional Geophysics at the British Geological Survey, with responsibility for ensuring that our geological knowledge of the UK meets the modern needs of the public, government and industry, supported by the latest scientific understanding.

I graduated from Sheffield University with a degree in Geology and went on to complete a PhD on Lower Jurassic palaeo-environments at Queen Mary College London in 1984. My ongoing research interests are in sedimentology, environmental geology, Triassic red beds and the implementation of new methods for geological and geophysical mapping.

I am currently a member of the Science Committee and Accreditation Committee of the Geological Society of London, which are responsible respectively for steering the Society's programme of scientific meetings and events, and for accreditation of earth science degree courses in UK universities. I am also a Vice President of the Yorkshire Geological Society, and will take over as President in December 2016.
